The Basics Facts about Grapefruit Essential Oil

How much do you know about Grapefruit essential oil, besides its pleasant smell?

Grapefruit (Citruis paradise) essential oil is one of the citrus essential oils, along with oils such a lemon, orange, and tangerine.  It’s aroma has been described as sweet, bright, and, of course, citrusy.  It is cold pressed from the rind of grapefruits, and is typically grown in South Africa and California.

The main chemical constituents of grapefruit essential oil are limonene (at 88% to 95%) and myrcene (at 1% to 4%).  According to WebMD, limonene (whose chemical structure is shown to the right) has a variety of uses including that begin with flavoring.  Limonene also helps ointments and creams better penetrate the skin and can be used to promote weight loss.

Grapefruit is consider a top note in perfume, and is described as having a clean, fresh, slightly bitter, citrusy scent.  When diffused, it has a reputation for encouraging emotions such as joy, contentment, and playfulness.

Typical Uses*

It has a reputation for aiding in cleansing and detoxifying your body while also acting as a diuretic.  It also supports a healthy cardiovascular system and when used on the skin it helps to combat the natural effects of aging, such as loss of toning.  It is believed to help reduce anxiety as well as and boost natural immunity.  When combined with a healthy diet and exercise, grapefruit taken internally can help support your weight management plan.

Many essential oil enthusiasts believe that grapefruit essential oil helps burn excess fat during weight loss and both apply it diluted directly to the areas of concern and mixing a drop with drinking water or a similar beverage.  It can be diluted and applied to your skin for a smooth, healthy looking glow.  Grapefruit essential oil can be combined with other essential oils to create a skin-toning massage oil or sugar scrub.

It’s also used in a variety of Young Living products, such as Cel-Lite Magic Massage Oil for firming and toning the skin, the Citrus Fresh essential oil blend, and the Slique Essence weight loss blend.

Proper Usage

Experts recommend a 1:1 dilution of grapefruit essential oil with a carrier oil, such as Young Living’s V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex.  It can be diffused up to one hour 3x a day.  Grapefruit oil can be directly applied in diluted form to the skin.  It can also be inhaled directly or even taken as a dietary supplement.  When taken as a dietary supplement, a few drops can be added to water (much like infused water) or drops can be added to a vegetarian gel capsule and taken once daily.  You can also add it to drinks like iced tea, or add it to Ningxia Red.

Side Effects and Warnings

If you apply it to your skin, be aware that it can make you more sensitive to sunlight, so avoid direct sunlight or UV rays for 12 hours.  Keep it away from your eyes and mucous membranes.  Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult a health professional prior to use.

If you have a reaction to it, or get it in your eyes or mucous membranes, don’t apply water!  Use the V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex, a fatty vegetable oil, whole fat milk, butter, or even coffee creamer from a restaurant.  Again, don’t use water and don’t try applying another oil on top of it to soothe it.
